Being on Google isn't enough anymore

You did the work: claimed the listing, gathered the reviews, built the site. It still matters — it's just no longer the whole job.

For a decade, 'we're on the first page of Google' was the goal. Many owners hit it and reasonably assumed they were covered. The ground has shifted: a growing share of buyers now get their shortlist from an AI assistant that may never show your Google listing at all.

Why 'on Google' and 'named by AI' aren't the same

AI reads Google — but it also reads reviews, directories, roundups, and the open web, then makes its own call about who to name. You can rank well on Google and still be left out of the assistant's answer, because it's summarizing, not listing.

The new finish line

The goal now is to be the name AI repeats when someone asks. Your Google work feeds that — but the only way to know if it's working is to check the answer itself, not just your ranking.
